Days: W/F
Time: 9:30-10:50 am
Location: Hall of Letters 213
Units: 4

This is an intensive beginning Latin class, focusing on grammar and translation, requiring daily homework, memorizing, possible quizzes, a collaboratively designed midterm demonstration of learning, and an ambitious final project.  No previous experience in studying Latin is required, but some students may find the pace rapid (in an exciting way, like a brisk walk).  Many have emerged from the experience, like Pip and schoolmates in Great Expectations, “with shrieks of intellectual victory.”  Your victory will include a firm grasp of basic grammar (of Latin and of English), a developing sense of the joys and challenges of translating, a bigger vocabulary, and at least a budding interest in Roman literature and history

Biography:

Over the years I’ve taught a variety of courses in literature and language, including medieval literature, Shakespeare and Film, a senior-level course in the history of literary criticism, Latin, Jane Austen, and many others.  I enjoy doing research on medieval manuscripts, the history of writing, Chaucer, Old French fabliaux, and comic theory.  For fun I like to dance.
